Folsom
Folsom is known across the country because of its 109 year old Folsom State Prison where residents and visitors can view and photograph the famous movie backdrop, as well asEast Gate, and parts of the high stone walls. There is also a small museum and gift shop which are continually in attendance.
Folsom's economy was orginially based on the state prison industry, but has in recent years shifted towards that of a commercial/manufacturing/retail/industrial economy. Fosom's central location is minutes away from four major freeways, five airports, freight and passenger rail lines, bus lines, and even an inland seaport.
Folsom's rich history began with the 49ers during California's Gold Rush. The site of California's first college, the West's first railroad, and the world's first long-distance transmission of electricity; Folsom has always been a forward-looking city. The city's general plan calls for a minumum of five acres of park land for each 1,000 residents, and for city co-sponsoring of special family activities. While the city offers the feel of a small city, it continues to offer all of the amenities of big city living, including numerous shopping and cultural facilities, as well as a variety of buildings hosting doctors, lawyers, financial consultants, and other professional specialists. These factors have continued to attract numbers of new commers who are looking for good jobs and/or good housing.
Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is the most popular multi-use, year 'round park in the entire California State Park system. Every year visitiors visit the 18,000-acre park ot fish, hike, camp, picnic, go horseback riding, water ski, boat, swim, and study nature. Two-thirds of the park is made up of water from two lakes. Folsom Lake, the larger of the two, has 120 miles of shoreline.
